Can I redeem ELSS mutual funds before three year lock in period

I have read views of Priyanka Chakrabarty on Quora website. Would be grateful if you can provide me a practical solution for my below Query. I have invested in Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund - MOST FOCUSED LONG TERM FUND. My agent did not told me that it was with a lock in period. Now I have urgent need for the funds. I have invested in this funds after 31.03.2016. And I would not take the tax benefits of the same?

Please note that MOST FOCUSED LONG TERM FUND is an ELSS fund with a lock-in-period of 3 years from the date of investment.

Investments in Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS), upto a maximum amount of Rs. 150,000 in a year, are eligible for tax rebate under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act 1961.

It is unfortunate that your agent did not disclose this to you. I am afraid, you will not be able to redeem this investment even if you are not going to avail the tax benefits.

Thanks for writing to Advisorkhoj.
