How did you get involved with the Mutual Fund Distribution business?
When my income was only Rs. 5,000 per month, I had a big challenge. I needed to take care of my daughter, who was born during those tough times. I was unsure about committing to monthly insurance payments, and I had doubts about whether it was a smart move. My skepticism about traditional financial options led me to teach myself about mutual funds and start investing.
In my pursuit of financial knowledge, I began giving lectures in different places. However, after delivering multiple talks, it dawned on me that I could reach a broader audience online. That's when I ventured into YouTube. To my surprise, my videos garnered a significant following, and I never expected such positive feedback.
Over the last 12-13 years, I achieved financial freedom through disciplined investing, accumulating approximately Rs 1 Crore. I kept reinvesting that money and built a substantial portfolio.
As I shifted from being an investor to a distributor, I chose to learn the ins and outs of advisory work on my own.
Today, I continue to share my journey and showcase my investment portfolio to help many others learn and invest wisely, contributing to the growing number of people securing their financial futures.
What is your current AUM size and how many clients do you have?
When asked about how much money I manage and how many clients I have, I'm proud to say that I manage around Rs. 60-70 Crores in assets, with about Rs. 90-95 Lakhs in monthly investments and around 1900-2000 clients.
What is your secret of attracting and retaining clients?
My strategy for gaining the trust of investors is rooted in my personal journey. I recommend aspiring distributors to start as investors themselves, just as I did. This approach allows them to better empathize with their future clients. Emphasizing honesty and transparency in investment dealings is key. I follow this principle by openly sharing my own investment records, which not only builds trust but also provides a valuable learning opportunity for potential investors.
I began my journey as an investor, avoiding purchases of assets like real estate or precious metals. Instead, I consistently invested in Mutual Funds, a strategy I continue to employ today. I openly share my investment statements with my prospective investors. When they see my history and realize their own financial missteps, they become more convinced. Thanks to my track record of achieving 12 to 15 percent returns without making such mistakes, gaining their trust becomes easier, leading them to invest their money.
What are some of the strategies you used to build your SIP Book?
Let me tell you a story. Imagine you're a distributor, trying to get someone to invest Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 every month. That's a lot of money, right? Well, here's what happened to me once.
I met with a few people who didn't believe that Mutual Funds could make them a lot of money. We talked for a whole hour, but they still weren't sure. They were about to leave when I had an idea. I said, "How about you start with just Rs. 100?" They thought that was a good idea and agreed to try it.
Guess what happened next? After only six months, they liked how their money was growing, so they started an SIP of Rs. 25,000 every month! It goes to show that starting small can lead to big things.
So, don't be upset if your friends or investors don't want to put in a lot of money right away. Explain your plans, and if they're still not sure, suggest they start with just a little bit, like Rs. 100, 200, or 1000. Some folks who want to invest a lot later might not agree at first, and that's okay.
I have many friends who started with just Rs. 100, and now their investment is worth 50 to 60 lakhs! It's because they learned how it works and decided to put in more money later.
How has been your experience with AssetPlus?
I've been using AssetPlus for almost 2 years now. Before I started using AssetPlus, there's not even a single app in India that I did not download & not delete after using it for a few days. I must have deleted 50 to 60 apps by now! I used to make small transactions of Rs. 500, and sometimes I even forgot where the money went.
But when I downloaded AssetPlus, I couldn't bring myself to delete it because it's super helpful. It does a lot of the work for me. There's a link where investors can enter their details, and they get onboarded automatically. So, I don't have to do much, and I can even spend time with my family or watch a movie while clients sign up.
One of the big problems I faced when I started in this business was dealing with a lot of paperwork and KYC stuff. Even 10 years ago, as an investor, I needed a PAN card and address proof. And guess what? After 3-4 years, they asked for the same details again! It didn't make sense because the mutual fund company already had the information. Then, every 4-5 years, they'd come up with a new KYC thing, and we had to fill out forms all over again. It's a real hassle for distributors like me.
But with AssetPlus, it's much easier. There's no documentation, no rejections, and everything happens smoothly. On a fixed date, the money automatically goes into the SIP, and investors have full control to stop, pause, or redeem their SIP. Plus, the brokerage comes on time, sometimes even earlier. What would you like to say to someone who aspires to become successful in this business?
My advice to aspiring mutual fund distributors is to use technology and their own experiences to educate and empower their clients. Sharing knowledge through videos, even if they're not fancy, can build trust and lead to business growth.
My journey, from struggling with a low income to managing crores in mutual funds, shows that with determination, self-education, and belief in the power of investments, anyone can succeed in the world of mutual fund distribution. I hope my story inspires others.
